It was an ordinary summer day. The grassy plain stretched interminably towards the horizon. The blinding light emitted from the sun reflected the dull green of the wild plants and vegetation, sporadically marred by patches of dark yellow. In some other cases the ground was entirely bald, a lone island of brown enclosed by life.
Save for the railroad that seemed to be dividing this peaceful atmosphere by half, the place seemed fortuitously unharmed by the intervention of mankind.
On this languid day, a herd of reindeer was just happening to be grazing alongside the aforementioned track. When the reindeer heard the universal distant roar of a train approaching them, they were not startled. They were used to loud and large objects coming their way. So, they continued their daily business like nothing is different as compartments whistled by them.
Their ears perked up, however, as the sound of glass breaking broke the routine. Instinct ordered them to flee, and so they did.
With a brief thump, two bodies, holding each other for dear life, landed on the soft grass. Everything else, even nature was silent –almost observing– as a series of cracks reverberated across the plains. They rolled, unable to stop their momentum, over the relatively soft surface, a thin trail of red blood contrasting with the green as they marked their past course.
They stopped. Slowly, almost deliberately, tense arms holding each other relaxed, and the tangle of limbs opened up like a flower stretching its petals to the sky. Their chests rose and fell almost imperceptibly. Unseeing eyes were looking at each other’s faces, and neither moved.
Red and yellow, between pure blue and green.
Nothing happened for quite some time.
